At the beginning of 2022, the African Development Bank (AfDB) updated its Integrated Safeguards System (ISS) to address emerging environmental and social development challenges in Kenya and across Africa. The draft updated ISS document spells out clear operational safeguards and policy requirements that if applied in totality will help in identifying and managing the environmental and social risks associated with development projects.
The ISS guidelines were first adopted and have become a cornerstone of the Bank’s vision on sustainable development. The system also promotes best practices and encourages greater transparency and accountability to the Bank’s stakeholders, including project host communities.
In May 2022, NECSA-K members were convened for a sitting to review the new AfDB ISS system document and comments were generated. These comments can be downloaded and read here.
